Carving out the Statue of Mission and Vision

New Life Church didn't just happen to stumble into existence some 23 years ago, here in Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia.  It had a unique purpose then and it has the same one now.  A week ago last Sunday evening a majority representation of our small congregation gathered to do a Mission Audit together.  It was a great exercise and experience.  Basically what it consists of is rediscovering our purpose and renewing our commitment to it.

What rose to the top of the audit (and what was historically there from the beginning) is that New Life has been noted for its family-sensitive outreach ministries.  We were born with a collection of families who gathered together so that they could be comfortable in an atmosphere of family-friendly worship and ministry activities.

Last night a token group from the audit-fellowship gathered to fine tune our mission and purpose into a Mission Statement.  Here is what we have narrowed down our renewed focus to be: To reach families of the Prospect Road area for Christ, and embrace them with the love of God.

Next we will work toward a Spirit-inspired vision that helps us see to detail what a family-focused fellowship will look like.  The vision actually provides a picture that will help us to realize when the purpose of the mission is coming together.

The story is told about a sculptor who was carving out a statue.  An interested observer asked, "Who are you making the statue of?"  The sculptor said, "It is a statue of David."  The observer asked, "How do you know what David looked like?"  The sculptor said, "Well, I guess I will know when I finish."

The vision process is like becoming a sculptor.  We begin first with what we envision the statue to look like, then we carve away until it is finished.  One thing to note is that when it is a vision from God we never see the finished product, at least in the beginning.  God doesn't allow us to see it, but only glimpses of what we could potentially be and look like according to the purpose and mission He has called us to.  Many would rather have guaranteed results before they begin, but then it wouldn't be an adventure of faith with God, would it?

New Life!  It is time to roll up our sleeves once again.  Let's get to it!  Bring out the carving tools and let's begin chipping away.  Here we come community!  God is pursuing you!

Blessings,

-Leo
