This may be helpful to you. I did this in my former church and some poeple loved it. I gave out my Sunday morning scripture reading and a brief overview of the message beforehand.
Sunday's message is quite thought provoking; at least it has been that way for me in preparing it. I want to stir your thinking about the "heart" or "deep emotion" of Jesus. I think Jesus reveals His true humanity when He allows His deep emotions to be seen by others. It is something that we can sense today through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The portions of scripture I will use for my message are: John 13:31, John 11:28-35, and Matthew 9:35-38. Can you find the common denominator in each one of these readings? Each of them portrays the emotions of Jesus in a slightly different way; and each one says that Jesus was "troubled in Spirit." Contemplate what it means to be Jesus and to be troubled in Spirit?
These are interesting portions of scripture to meditate on, through the power of the Holy Spirit, and study what they really mean and should say to us. What is the true principle meaning that God wants us to understand, and to apply to our lives?
I am not going to give away my secrets, except to say that they all confirm a great core value that should be in every church of Jesus Christ - Care and Compassion. God wants us to be a caring community, like Jesus was a caring Lord and Saviour to the world. He wants us to put on the heart of Jesus; which is to say, see the world through the eyes of His heart and act accordingly.
In each of the above portions of scripture Jesus is moved with compassion toward someone/or others. Can you identify each incident? In at least one case it is not easy to see, but it is there. I will tell you about it on Sunday morning. Enjoy:
